The Plumbing That Gets Ignored Until It Causes Damage
Outdoor plumbing — hose bibs (outdoor faucets), irrigation systems, and outdoor kitchens with water supply — receives less maintenance attention than indoor plumbing and fails more frequently because of it. The outdoor environment subjects these systems to temperature extremes, UV exposure, physical contact, and seasonal changes that indoor plumbing doesn’t face.
The two most common and most costly outdoor plumbing failures — a frozen and burst outdoor faucet and an irrigation system with a cracked manifold or ruptured line — are almost entirely preventable with seasonal maintenance that most homeowners either don’t know about or postpone until after the damage occurs.
Frost-Free vs. Standard Hose Bibs: Know What You Have
A standard (non-frost-free) hose bib has its shutoff valve at the exterior wall — the pipe exposed to outdoor temperatures when the faucet is closed. In freezing temperatures, any water remaining in this pipe freezes and can burst the pipe or the faucet body, causing flooding when the system thaws. Standard hose bibs require an interior shutoff valve to be closed and the exterior faucet opened each fall to drain the pipe.
A frost-free hose bib (also called an anti-siphon or freeze-proof faucet) has its shutoff valve 6–12 inches inside the wall, where the temperature stays above freezing. When the faucet is closed, water drains from the outdoor portion of the pipe automatically. Frost-free bibs don’t require winterization — unless a hose is left attached, which prevents the automatic drainage and eliminates the frost protection.
Irrigation System Winterization: Blowout vs. Drain
Irrigation systems with water remaining in the lines when temperatures drop below freezing experience cracked pipes, broken emitters, and fractured valve bodies — failures that often aren’t discovered until the following spring when the system is reactivated. Winterization removes this water before freezing occurs.
Blowout winterization uses compressed air (a compressor, rented if necessary, of at least 20 CFM capacity) to force water out of the lines through the open zones. Each zone is operated while the compressor clears the water through the heads. This is the most thorough method and is required for systems with any low points where water wouldn’t drain by gravity alone. Drain winterization (using automatic or manual drain valves at low points in the system) is appropriate for systems specifically designed with gravity drain capability — verify your system type before choosing the method.
Backflow Prevention: The Code Requirement Most Homeowners Don’t Know About
Irrigation systems and outdoor hose connections are required by plumbing code to have backflow prevention devices — mechanisms that prevent contaminated outdoor water from being siphoned back into the potable water supply if supply pressure drops. Without backflow prevention, pesticides, fertilizers, and soil bacteria from irrigation systems can enter the home’s drinking water.
The most common backflow preventer for residential irrigation is the pressure vacuum breaker (PVB) — a device on the irrigation supply line above the highest irrigation head that opens to air if supply pressure drops, breaking any potential backflow siphon. These devices require annual testing to verify function and winterization (the test ports must be drained before freezing). Many municipalities require irrigation backflow preventers to be tested annually by a licensed backflow tester.
Outdoor Kitchen Plumbing: Planning for Year-Round Use
Outdoor kitchens with permanent water supply — a sink, a refrigerator with ice maker, a natural gas or propane line with water-cooled connections — require the same winterization consideration as any other outdoor plumbing. A permanently plumbed outdoor kitchen in a climate with freezing winters needs either a shutoff valve with drain capability inside the heated building envelope, or heat trace cable on exposed lines, or both.
The practical winterization for a permanent outdoor kitchen: a dedicated shutoff valve inside the house for the outdoor kitchen supply line, drain valves at the lowest points of the outdoor run, and the discipline to actually use these systems before the first freeze of the season. An outdoor kitchen that requires emergency replumbing after a freeze is a recurring cost that careful seasonal maintenance eliminates entirely.
